Protect your collection before you need to

If a hurricane, a burst pipe, a move or a theft damages or takes a work of art, your insurer will ask one question first: what is it worth, and can you prove it? An insurance appraisal answers that question in advance, in a form adjusters and underwriters accept.

Helmuth Art Advisory prepares insurance appraisals for Florida collectors with one important painting, a few works inherited from family, or a whole house of art, prints, sculpture and decorative objects. Each report is prepared personally by Austin Helmuth, a member of the International Society of Appraisers, to USPAP standards.

What you receive

  • A written USPAP-compliant appraisal report addressed to you (and your insurer, if you wish)
  • Retail replacement value for each item, with the effective date and the market considered
  • Identification: artist, title, date, medium, dimensions, signatures, inscriptions and labels
  • Condition notes and photographs for each work, useful for scheduling and for any future claim
  • A clear summary schedule your agent can use to set or adjust coverage

Why replacement value matters in Florida

Insurance uses a different value than a sale. A painting that might bring a certain figure at auction can cost considerably more to replace at retail, through a gallery or dealer. Using the wrong figure leaves you underinsured, or paying premiums on value you could never collect. A proper appraisal states the type of value, the reasoning and the comparable market, so the number holds up.

Florida adds its own pressures: storm surge and wind on the coast, humidity and salt air that affect canvas, paper and frames, and the seasonal moves many collectors make between homes. A current appraisal, with photographs and condition notes, puts you in the strongest position if you ever need to file a claim.

When to get an insurance appraisal

  • You bought or inherited a work of art and want it covered properly
  • Your insurer or agent asked for a current appraisal to schedule items
  • Your last appraisal is several years old, or the artist's market has changed
  • You are moving, renovating, lending a work or putting items into storage
  • Hurricane season is coming and you want documentation in place

Already had a loss?

If a work has been damaged, keep all pieces and fragments, photograph everything before it is moved, and contact your insurer. Austin can help document what was lost or damaged and its value as of the date of loss. [CONFIRM: does Austin offer damage / loss-claim appraisals?]

Process

How an insurance appraisal works

Most clients start with photos. Fees are quoted upon request, with no obligation.

  1. Send photos & details

Use the form to upload a few photos (front, back, signature, labels) and tell us what the appraisal is for.

  2. Quote & scope

Fees are quoted upon request, based on scope. You receive a written quote and a clear scope: purpose, type of value, effective date and what the report will include.

  3. Inspection & research

Austin examines the work in person or reviews documentation as the assignment requires, then researches comparable sales.

  4. Your written report

A USPAP-compliant report with descriptions, photographs, methodology and the value conclusion you need.

FAQ

Insurance appraisal questions

What type of value does an insurance appraisal use?

Most insurance appraisals report retail replacement value: what it would cost to replace the work with one of like kind and quality in the appropriate retail market, within a reasonable time. That is usually higher than what the work would bring at auction, which is why insurance and resale figures should never be mixed.

Does my homeowners policy already cover my art?

Standard homeowners policies often cap or limit coverage for fine art, and may not cover breakage or mysterious disappearance. Many collectors schedule important works on a rider or a dedicated fine art policy, which typically requires a current appraisal. Your agent can confirm what your policy covers.

How often should an insurance appraisal be updated?

Markets move, and insurers commonly ask for updated values every few years. Many collectors in Florida review values before hurricane season (June 1 to November 30) and after any major purchase, inheritance or move. [CONFIRM Austin's recommended update interval]

Can you appraise a single painting for insurance?

Yes. An insurance appraisal can cover one work or an entire household collection. A single piece is a common request, especially after a purchase or inheritance.

What will my insurer receive?

A written, USPAP-compliant report identifying each work with a description, dimensions, medium, condition notes, photographs and the replacement value, along with the method and the market used. It is the documentation adjusters ask for when you schedule a work or file a claim.

How much does an insurance appraisal cost?

Fees are quoted upon request, based on scope: the number of works, the purpose of the appraisal and the turnaround needed. They are never a percentage of the appraised value, and you receive a written quote before any work begins.

How long does it take?

[TURNAROUND PLACEHOLDER: e.g. typical days from inspection to report] If you have a renewal or a deadline, mention it on the form.
