Selling a collection is a series of decisions
Which works should go to a major auction house? Which belong in a regional sale, a private treaty or a consignment? What should be sold now, and what should wait? Get these choices wrong and a collection can leave real money on the table. Helmuth Art Advisory helps Florida families, estates and collectors answer them in the right order.
Austin Helmuth consults with executors, trustees, attorneys and families on liquidation planning and orderly sales through the proper venues: private sale, leading auction houses, or a sequenced approach across channels. His work includes brokering the complete collection of Lou Pritchett, former President of Procter & Gamble, and placing masterworks from the Eli Wilner collection.
What you get
- An honest review: what you have, what matters, and what is primarily sentimental
- Realistic value ranges based on comparable sales, not wishful asking prices
- A venue plan: which works go to which auction house, private buyer or consignment, and why
- Timing advice: seasonal sales calendars and market conditions for each artist
- Hands-on management of consignments, shipping and private-sale negotiation
Who we help
- Families selling inherited art or downsizing a Florida home
- Executors and trustees with an obligation to realize fair value
- Collectors refining or deaccessioning part of a collection
- Institutions planning deaccessions
Discretion, start to finish
Many sellers prefer that their collection not be publicized. Private sales and brokerage can be handled with buyer or seller representation, private treaty introductions and guidance on timing, presentation and negotiation. Where public auction is the stronger course, Austin prepares and places consignments with the houses best suited to the property.

FAQ
Selling a collection: questions
Is it better to sell a collection at auction or privately?
It depends on the works. Auction can create competition for in-demand artists. A private sale can be faster and more discreet for important works. Consignment can suit works that sell best with time and the right buyer. Most collections benefit from a mix, which is the plan Austin builds with you.
Do you buy collections outright?
[CONFIRM: does Austin purchase outright, or only advise/broker/consign?]
How are you paid when helping me sell?
Fees for sales advisory are quoted upon request, based on the scope of the assignment. Any fee and any potential conflict of interest is disclosed in writing before you commit.
Do I need an appraisal before selling?
Not necessarily. A sale-oriented review focuses on realistic selling prices and the best venue. A formal appraisal is useful if you also need values for an estate, insurance or tax.
Can you handle an entire house of art and objects?
Austin can advise on the art and the significant decorative works and help plan an orderly sale through the proper venues, coordinating with executors, trustees and family. [CONFIRM: scope for general household contents]
What if some pieces have little value?
You will hear that honestly. Not everything is worth sending to auction, and knowing that early saves time and fees.
